Insurance Information

Many insurance companies now cover weight loss surgery. BMI works with all major insurance carriers including medicare. Our concierge team will work diligently to expedite your approval.

Please be aware that although coverage in Texas is better than in many other states, there are many projects that must be completed by patients in order to gain an approval. Insurance companies will frequently require a 6-12 month pre-operative medically supervised diet. They will also ask for a significant past weight history. Several companies will not cover the procedure unless you have been morbidly obese for 5 consecutive years.

These requirements are not fair and make absolutely no medical sense. We don’t tell patients with other medical problems (diabetes, heart disease, or cancer) that they need to wait 6 months for definitive therapy or that they must suffer for 5 years before treatment will be covered. These are unfortunate hurdles that we must cross to get to surgery. Hopefully the rules will change, but in the mean time your team at BMI of Texas will help you navigate through these processes to get the treatment that you need.
