BMI of Texas is thrilled to welcome its new Physician Assistant, Melinda Verduzco Gonzalez. Melinda is committed to educating patients and empowering them to succeed with their health and weight loss goals. She is focused on patient education and helping patients feel more comfortable as they journey through the surgical process and beyond on their weight loss journey.
A native of South Texas, Melinda received her B.A. degree in Biology from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and her M.S. degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Baylor College of Medicine. While at St. Mary’s, Melinda was selected to the National Honor Society and was inducted into the Order of Omega for excelling in leadership and academics. Melinda served as vice president of her sorority and chaired committees on risk management, women’s health and alcohol awareness. During her senior year, Melinda was selected to serve as a Teaching Assistant for Genetics and Molecular Biology courses. At Baylor, Melinda was a member of the Baylor Student Government Association, where she served as Chairperson of the External Relations Committee.
Melinda gained valuable work experience as a research assistant and teaching in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and at The University of Texas-Pan American. Her recent research was published in The American Journal of Cardiology and she was asked to present this study at the American Heart Association conference in Baltimore, Maryland — a tremendous honor!
While working alongside the health professionals at The Davis Clinic in Houston, Melinda gained extensive bariatric surgery experience while developing her passion for helping patients achieve healthier lifestyles. It was there she realized the profound impact weight loss surgery can have on a patient’s life and it became clear to her that she wanted to continue to be a part of this transformation. Melinda’s surgical expertise now includes laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric banding, revision weight loss surgeries, and other general surgeries. She is certified to perform in-office adjustable gastric band fills by Allergan and Ethicon banding companies.
On a personal note, Melinda was married in 2009, and is thrilled about being back in San Antonio with her new husband as they embark upon this new chapter in their lives.
