
Richard K. Englehardt, MD, is available to meet patients’ general and bariatric surgery needs. In addition to his general surgical training, he has completed advanced fellowship training in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. As an advanced laparoscopic surgeon, he offers excellent surgical outcomes with less pain and shorter healing times than traditional open surgical methods. He is also well-versed in open surgical techniques should the need arise.
Dr. Englehardt specializes in weight loss surgery and has extensive knowledge in the surgical treatment of obesity. He offers patients a wide range of surgical weight loss options, including Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and adjustable gastric banding. He also performs a broad spectrum of minimally invasive general surgeries. His expertise includes complex abdominal operations using laparoscopy to treat conditions of the stomach, intestines, gallbladder, pancreas, colon, adrenal glands, liver, spleen, and hernias.
A recognized leader in surgical innovation, Dr. Englehardt is a National Consultant and Proctor for the da Vinci robot, and frequently participates in speaking engagements, physician training, and proctoring for Intuitive, the company that develops and manufactures the da Vinci robotic surgical platform. His work supports the ongoing advancement and adoption of robot-assisted surgery across the nation.
He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and has been recognized by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery for successfully completing advanced fellowship training through a fully accredited program. Born in Provo, Utah, he earned an Honors Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from the University of Utah and received his MD from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City. He completed his general surgery residency at Providence Hospital and Medical Centers in Southfield, Michigan.
Following residency, Dr. Englehardt relocated to San Antonio, where he completed an advanced surgical fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery with Dr. Terive Duperier and Dr. Michael Seger in conjunction with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
He is an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Texas Medical Association, Bexar County Medical Association, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, and the Clinical Robotic Surgery Association.
