BMI of Texas Expands Services with LINX Reflux Management for GERD and BioTe Hormone Replacement Therapy

The Bariatric Medical Institute of Texas (BMI of Texas), which provides innovative and comprehensive medical and surgical care to patients with obesity and metabolic disease, today announced it has expanded its services to include the LINX® Reflux Management System and BioTe® hormone replacement therapy.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic disease which affects more than 20 million Americans. The LINX Reflux Management System is intended to help patients suffering from GERD via the placement of a small implant comprised of interlinked titanium beads with magnetic cores. The magnetic attraction between the beads augments the existing esophageal sphincter’s barrier function to prevent reflux. The device is implanted using a standard minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure.

BMI of Texas surgeon Dr. Richard Englehardt has recently established a comprehensive Reflux Center of Excellence in San Antonio which offers a full line of options for reflux management including the LINX Reflux Management System. BMI of Texas surgeon Dr. Punam Patel believes the LINX system can provide relief for patients. “Multiple peer-reviewed studies have shown LINX to be a safe, effective and durable treatment option for GERD. At BMI of Texas, our goal is to help our patients lead healthier lives – and the LINX system is an innovative option providing positive results for patients suffering from reflux, even those who have had certain weight loss surgeries,” said Dr. Patel, who is one of San Antonio’s only female fellowship-trained advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgeons. Her training enables her to offer complex, minimally invasive surgeries of the abdomen as well as a wide variety of weight loss procedures including sleeve gastrectomy and roux-en-y gastric bypass.

In addition to the LINX system, BMI of Texas is now offering BioTe hormone replacement patient therapy to patients. “As people age, their hormone production changes, and hormonal imbalance can occur as a result. Our patient population is comprised of people who are experiencing significant weight loss, and their hormones can be affected,” said Dr. Mickey Seger, a bariatric surgeon and co-founder of BMI of Texas. “Our goal is to provide our patients with everything they need to succeed on their weight loss journey, which is why we have dietitians and behavioral health specialists on staff in addition to our physicians and nurse practitioners. When patients come to BMI of Texas, they are entering a supportive environment with the right resources available to help them.”

Obesity is a multi-factorial and complex disease, which is why BMI of Texas created a unique, comprehensive program to help patients maintain their health and weight long-term. The physicians and staff are dedicated to creating an enduring partnership with patients in order to ensure their long-term success by providing care in a supportive, compassionate, and guilt-free environment. BMI of Texas helps patients achieve their weight loss goals and improved health through various surgical procedures including gastric bypass, Obalon Balloon System, LAP-BAND, duodenal switch and gastric sleeve, as well as a comprehensive medical weight management program.

BMI of Texas weight loss surgeons Terive Duperier, MD, FACS, Richard Englehardt, MD, FACS, and Michael Seger, MD, FACS, have been repeatedly recognized by San Antonio Scene in the magazine’s annual listing of the city’s top physicians. Dr. Jennifer Seger, who heads up the practice’s medical weight loss program, is recognized in the Bariatric Medicine category. The BMI of Texas doctors have repeatedly been recognized by their peers dating back the awards’ inception in 2005.
